Sammy Watkins for HeismanOctober 27, 2011
Who is Sammy Watkins, you ask? Honestly, you must be an Brazilian Amazon tribe member if you have not heard of this kid! Watkins is the 6’1, 210 lbs, 18 year old true freshman from Fort Meyers, Florida, same hometown as Deion Sanders, who is already making history in Clemson, South Carolina. The nerve of a freshman to be this damn good and we are only just over halfway through this inaugural campaign as a freshman. There have been few players in the college game that have made such a big splash so early. Adrian Peterson, Ron Dayne, Marshal Faulk, Marcus Dupree were all tailbacks but to do this type of work as a WR is just flat out RARE. Randy Moss once he finally got settled at Marshall was this good, DeSean Jackson was electrifying as a freshman at Cal, Robert Woods was amazing last year at USC but it is hard to think more WRs that made such an immediate impact.
54 catches 819 receiving yards and 9 touchdowns through 8 games is all you need to know about Watkins productivity. With all due respect to Odell Beckam Jr at LSU and Isiah Crowell at Georgia, simply put Watkins is the freshman of the year hands down and it isn’t even close. Remember back in August when the impact freshman in the state of South Carolina was supposed to be Jadaveon Clowney? Clowney is enjoying a fine freshman year but the transition from high school is always tougher on the defensive line. Taking nothing away from Watkins, his performance against an upstart Maryland team was the stuff of legend …345 total yards capped by an 89 yard kickoff return that completed an 18 pt comeback. Clemson QB Tajh Boyd is putting up absurd numbers and he may be the only reason Watkins would not win the Heisman if they both keep producing and Clemson stays undefeated…… a split in votes because they both are deserving.
We all know that the Heisman Trophy voting is jaded as hell and usually goes to the hottest player on a team ranked 5th or higher but unless we are talking Baylor’s RG3 (not ranked high enough) has Standord QB Andrew Luck really been the BEST PLAYER IN THE COUNTRY? I think that Trent Richardson’s numbers are inflated to say the least. Think about this scenario in regards to Richardson: The best defense in the country only allowing 180 yards per game, gives you the ball back time and time again and Trent gets to be the star tailback going against tired defenses every Saturday. I think any tailback would get huge numbers in that specific setup and it does not hurt to have the offensive line that Alabama has. That being said, I think that there is no freshman in the country more deserving of the accolades as Watkins is. No freshman has every won the Heisman award but I think it is high time to change our perspective because, quite frankly, Sammy Watkins has forced college football to rethink how we look at possible Heisman Trophy winners.
