Last weekend, I caught up with Kreayshawn and exchanged a few questions for answers after her set in Austin, TX.
6Magazine: Since you have a background in music video directing is it easier to make a transition into being a musical artist?
Kreayshawn: Yeah I think it’s easier to transition if you’ve got like, an understanding of music and how to edit clips with music. As far as being in front of the camera—like directing—you know what you want so you can just do whatever you want.
6Magazine: Where do you get a lot of your inspiration from? Do you do what your fans want to see or kind of just do whatever you want?
Kreayshawn: I do a lot of whatever I want, but a lot of my inspiration comes from the 90s.
6Magazine: I know you have a thing with cats, and after working with “Gucci Gucci” I came up with this: One big room, full of sad kittens. You can pitch it to the ASPCA for pet adoption awareness.
Kreayshawn: Ooh, I would love to be a part of that! I adopted my cat.
6Magazine: See? You could be an advocate for it.
Kreayshawn: I would be. I’d love to be.
6Magazine: So what do you have coming up in the near future?
Kreayshawn: I’ve got a tour that’s starting. It’s a two week tour and it’s just all of these college cities. I’m going to be on a tour bus so that’s going to be cool.
6Magazine: That’s with Neon Indian, right?
Kreayshawn: Yeah, I haven’t met him but it’s crazy because I listen to the music and I used their songs in one of my videos that I edited before, so it’s really cool.
