First let me say that we have come a long way technologically when a college announces via Twitter that they have hired a new coach. That is exactly what Arizona did today announcing that “Rich Rod” will be the next head coach at the University of Arizona. I think that this is a great fit for the Wildcats. Lute Olson may have been able to draw great basketball talent to Arizona for a long time but on the gridiron it has been touch to get talent to Tuscon. Rodriguez doesn’t need “prototype” guys to be successful in his offense he just needs speed, speed, and more speed.
Rich never fit in at Michigan and the Big 10 from an offensive perspective and in my opinion never got a fair shake at Michigan because he changed that program from the roots to the treetop. The Michigan faithful and UM brass never fully bought in to his vision even though the team he put together is now sitting at 9-2 and contending for a Big 10 title. Largely because of what Chip Kelly has done at Oregon and the dynamic Pac-12 offensive blueprint, he is a perfect fit for Arizona.
Fans in the Pac-12 are used to high powered uptempo offensives. Arizona does not have to fight every school in the country for a Matt Barkley “type” quarterback to be successful. While Dernard “Shoelace” Robinson is a very special player it is a lot easier to recruit his type of QB than an elite eleven, prototype, all world qb to make a pro style offense to go. Furthermore, I am not sure if he will bring the 3-3-5 defense to Arizona but again it is easier to find outstanding athletes to compliment that scheme than a 4-3 . Rich Rod just from a schematic perspective can make a real big splash at Arizona in a very short amount of time. This is true because the personnel at Arizona is better fitted to spread option than what was present at Michigan when he was hired there and quite frankly Arizona has nowhere to go but up. If the natives can stay patient, Arizona could be positioning itself to be a power in the WEAK Pac-12 south. As always time will tell but I think Arizona got this hire right.
