Houston in the BCS Championship?November 23, 2011
Please understand this post is contingent on the Cougars remaining undefeated.Houston deserves a shot at the national title on based on principle and merit of the amazing season they are having this year. Is there any other sport in the NCAA where an undefeated team does not get a chance to at least attempt to contend for a national title? Boise State used to get on my nerves with several legitimate attempts to crash the BCS title game party in recent years past.
I have reached a conclusion about college football since then regarding these BCS busters that always appear this time of year. I used to care about the pageantry and tradition from the Kickoff Classic to most bowl games being played on January 1st. However, year after year there is an aversion in college football from tradition to greed. Traditional conference alignments change daily, regional alliances and rivalries mean nothing. Corruption (Miami, Ohio State, Penn State) is at an all time high so why should i adhere to a traditional train of thought when the institutions that used to make this sport so great don’t?
I don’t care that the SEC West is better than the NFC East. If Houston and LSU are the only two undefeated teams how can you legitimately defend against any other match-up for the title?. I mean West Virginia is in the Big XII but we don’t have a playoff, hell nothing makes sense anymore why should the title game? Something has to give at this point 2011 has been a very emotional year and one hell of a roller coaster ride lets end it with a bang! In all honesty as many recruits as LSU gets out of the Houston Metro area lets give the Cougars a chance at revenge.
Houston is on pace to be the only team ever to score at least 35 points in every game in a season outside of the 1995 Nebraska Cornhuskers. #letitmarinate. I think this Houston offense will suffice as a challenge for the Honey Badger and the vaunted tiger defense. Remember the lesser passing game of WVU lit them up earlier this year. This offense may remind some of the David Klingler and Andre Ware led Houston teams that lit up the SWC at the end of its glory days but this team has something those teams did not. Case Keenum!! The numbers and makeup may be similar but Keenum is the NCAA all time leader in passing yards and completions. In laments terms he is the most prolific player ever to toss an onion in college football history. Furthermore, having 38 touchdowns against 3 interceptions is just a scary stat for a qb that puts the ball in the air so often.
Kevin Sumlin has done a marvelous job with the Cougars from his initial marquee victory over Texas Tech in 2009 leading up to this years undefeated record. Houston is an upstart with damn good QB who most believe should never make the BCS. Fans of college football have every reason in the world to doubt them but these days we doubt everything else about college football, so how about a title game you may not want to see but at the very least is pure in its fairness to the game.
