Miami Hurricane Top Ten Plays of All-TimeNovember 11, 2011

The Miami vs. Florida State game is this weekend. Although both teams are shells of their former selves they will both get back on track sooner than you think. I remember watching this game all of the damn time being a Florida State fan. It’s funny because the other half of 6Magazine, Claude Clayborne was a die-hard Miami Hurricanes fans. The city of Miami has more athletes than the dope boys have grams of cocaine. Mix great athletes with high octane offenses and stingy defenses and you’re bound to see awesomeness. Here are the Top Ten Miami Hurricane Football plays of all time. They’re DOPE!

10. Shockey the World – 10/7/2000
Miami Hurricanes vs. Florida State Seminoles

Florida State vs. Miami is always a classic and the 2000 game was legendary. In the final seconds, Ken Dorsey threw to a backup tight end that would later go by the name…“Shockey” as he shocked the world and the Canes went on to victory 27 – 24.

9. The Best Receiver on the Planet – 11/17/2001
Miami Hurricanes vs. Syracuse Orangemen

Andre Johnson makes the Syracuse Orangemen look green. One of Johnson’s many touchdown grabs on the way to an undefeated season and a national championship. Canes win, 59 – 0.

8. Super Lamario – 1/1/1992
Miami Hurricanes vs. Nebraska Cornhuskers

Arguably the best jump ball receiver to every play college football was Lamar Thomas. This was the best of many acrobatic catches Mr. Thomas brought in as a Cane. It also helped his team prevail 22-0 over the Nebraska Cornhuskers in the ’92 Orange Bowl.

7. 3rd and 43 – 11/25/1989
Miami Hurricanes vs. Notre Dame Fighting Irish

On 3rd and 43 on your own 7 yard line, most teams would try to give their punter breathing room. Nope, the Canes said fuck it, “we’re going long”. Who completes a 3rd and 43? Canes do against the #1 ranked Notre Dame Fighting Irish. The game recognized as Catholics vs. Convicts, went to the Canes 27-10.

6. Devin Inside the Temple – 10/15/2005
Miami Hurricanes vs. Temple Owls

Temple’s punt return defense was very holy. Holes all up in it and through it, and it was subsequently shredded to pieces by Devin Hester and so was their team as the Canes went onto victory, 34-3.

5. Kenny Calhoun Ain’t Having It – 1/2/1984
Miami Hurricanes vs. Nebraska Cornhuskers

Thank goodness Tom Osborne had the ball to go for two in a national championship game with the game on the line. Also, thank goodness for Kenny Calhoun’s fingertips to bat the ball away and secure the Canes national championship.

4. Irvin v. FSU – 10/3/1987
Miami Hurricanes vs. Florida State Seminoles

The Playmaker always makes plays. This was a 73-yard bomb from Vinny Testaverde to defeat their rival, Florida State Seminoles. Who knew Mike had wheels on him?

3. Ed Reed: “Gimme that!” – 11/10/2001
Miami Hurricanes vs. Boston College Golden Eagles

Did Ed Reed get credit for a forced fumble and fumble recovery on this play? Either way, it was a close win, 18-7 over Boston College that helped Miami reach the Rose Bowl later in the season.

2. Devin Does Duke – 10/8/2005
Miami Hurricanes vs. Duke Blue Devils

Nerds vs. Super Athletes, anyone with a brain and money to their name should have known something like this was going to happen, the second best play in Miami Football history by Devin Hester. Super Athletes 52 – Nerds 7.

1. The Miami Rules – 1/1/1991
Miami Hurricanes vs. Texas Longhorns

This play explains it all. The Canes don’t give a damn. They are better than you and will let you know. If you don’t like it, stop them. Randall Hill took the pass into the endzone and then the tunnel. After this game, the NCAA changed it’s celebration rules and they were nicknamed, The Miami Rules.
