Urban Meyer is the head football coach at The Ohio State University as of this week. I think that it is a great hire for Ohio State and the pairing will result in success on the field for the Buckeyes. Yet, I can’t help but to think that Meyer’s biggest competition may be himself as he enters competition in the Big Ten. There have been numerous references to his time away from the game and health issues at Florida which lead to him leaving coaching prematurely.
The point that I am trying to make is the “Big Ten stigma” that he helped create is not his job to beat. Remember Meyer did not do Ohio State any favors at Florida. I distinctly remember that 41-14 woodshed job that Gator team handed Ohio State in the 2006 BCS National Championship Game. Meyer helped build this “SEC Mystique” that for all intensive purposes still holds true to this day. Nowhere in the country can you get better offensive and defensive linemen than in SEC country. Jadaveon Clowney, Nick Fairley, Tyson Jackson, Barkevious Mingo, Marcus Spears, Melvin Ingram, Carlos Dunlap, Terrence Cody and Marcel Dareus all are amazing current or former SEC defensive lineman. The defensive line play is the difference between the SEC and every other conference in the country. No other area produces lineman with the type of size and speed as the South does. Meyer continued to feed the monster at Florida, but can he bring the same type of success to Ohio state?
I totally respect the body of work that Meyer did at Bowling Green, Utah and Florida but can he bring the type of players to Ohio State that can make them better than they were under former head coach, Jim Tressel? Can he win the big games that Ohio State has not won since their miracle win in the desert against Miami for the 2002 BCS title? I believe in Meyer wholeheartedly, but I think that Florida provided him some perks in coaching that the head coach at Ohio State does not have — superior defensive lineman in close proximity.
Ohio State is already a big player in recruiting, but can Meyer really pull the best players in the Sunshine State away from FSU, Florida, Miami, Alabama, Georgia, LSU and Auburn on a regular basis? I don’t think he can do that with regularity, so I dont think that he will win multiple national titles at OSU like people are predicting. I mention Florida, because he has recruiting ties there but you need players from below the Mason-Dixon line to have chance these days. Ohio State doesn’t have the pull to get these type of players year in and year out. I think the SEC Monster that Urban helped create in his hayday at Florida will be the exact reason Ohio State continues be what they always have been “A big fish in a small pond”.
Meyer will continually get 11- 1 and 10-2 records at OSU, but don’t think for a second that the Buckeyes will ever be good enough to uproot the SEC stranglehold on college football. Ohio State Urban Meyer’s biggest nemesis will be the ghost of Florida Urban Meyer. I wish the Buckeye Nation the best of luck, because they will need it to be more than Big Ten champs in the future.
