“The Pirate” in at WSUNovember 30, 2011
According to Bruce Feldman of CBS Sports, Mike Leach has agreed to become to the next head coach at Washington State University. The Pirate, as Leach is often referred to, comes to Pullman with some baggage but his résumé in coaching cannot be denied. Leach has put up staggering numbers at every school he has coached at including Kentucky,Oklahoma, and as the head Coach at Texas Tech. I expect nothing less than this standard of offensive wizardry at WSU under Coach Leach.
If Leach can build a winning program in Lubbock, Texas then he will have no problem building one in Pullman, Washington. I also think Leach’s recruiting ties to Texas and Oklahoma will also pay some dividends as well. The ability to recruit the West Coast will also help the Cougars win some games in the Pac-12 North. The cupboard is not bare as the Cougars have two good QBs in Jeff Teul and Conor Halliday and were just a few injuries away from getting over the hump this year. Bringing the Pirate to Quarterback U is a match made in heaven.
Even if the Cougars don’t dominate the conference, which nobody is expecting, they will be a thorn in the side of every team in the Pac-12 trying to stop the Air Raid offense. An interesting point is the assimilation of absolute firepower that the Pac-12 has accumulated in recent years. Rich Rodriguez will surely put up big numbers at Arizona; USC is rolling offensively with Matt Barkley, Marqis Lee and Robert Woods. Washington and Keith Price can score with anybody and Stanford puts up points even though they run the most traditional offense in the league with Andrew Luck. Chip Kelly is not hitting the brakes on the Ducks high powered offense any time soon and if Arizona State or UCLA hires Kevin Sumlin away from Houston get ready for the Pac-12 to become Star Wars overnight.
I really think we may look at this hire in two or thre years and see how brilliant a move it was on the part of WSU. Leach will fill seats and has proven he can rebuild a program in the middle of nowhere and do it with style. The quirky PIRATE is back and that is good for college football on the whole. There are however, 11 defensive coordinators worst nightmare being realized with Leach joining the fold. Hats off to WSU for bringing in Leach a move Maryland and others shied away from. This move gives him a chance to move on from the Texas Tech fiasco and really sets up next year in the Pac-12 as an exciting one. Get your scoreboards ready for some awesome shootouts in 2012.
