Tim Tebow’s Place in the NFLNovember 2, 2011
by: Jonathan Reynolds
Tim Tebow has excelled at every level of football that he has attempted until now. He was an All-American QB at Nease High School in Jacksonville, FL before taking his talents to Gainesville and Gator Nation. As a young player on a more experienced team, Tebow had a special package of plays that allowed him to showcase his talents behind starting senior QB, Chris Leak. The Gators would go on to win the MNC (mythical national championship) that year and Tebow mania had begun.
Tim Tebow was famous for his work ethic, his leadership, his home schooled upbringing, and his staunch religious views long before he became a folk hero on the gridiron. Tim has never been unclear on where he stands with choices many other elite collegiate players might make. While others might be out on the town or trying to hunt down coeds, Tim was studying film, working out,or partaking in something else that might lift his status to Chuck Norris levels.
This story sounds very uplifting and downright amazing so far, doesn’t it? Well it is and it isn’t too good to be true. But something happened along the way. Something happened that I don’t even think TT could have foreseen. Somehow, someway, Tim became a living cult figure. Tebow became polarizing. People LOVED Tebow and everything that came with that love. The other 50% of the population was sick of hearing about Tebow and the truck he had pushed up a hill, the orphans he circumcised, or the way he willed his team to their latest epic victory. It was a strange phenomenon. Here was this kid who had never been in trouble for missing curfew, arguing with coaches, underage drinking, or anything within a 17 acre radius of trouble. But yet, in some strange twist of fate, Tebow had managed to create a faction of people who disliked him and wanted him to fail.
Fast forward to present day. Tebow, much to the delight of the Denver Broncos’ fans, is now a starter in the NFL. He is coming off a game where his team lost in embarrassing fashion, 45-10. I don’t really know if Tebow has ever had to encounter such a lopsided loss in his entire career. Now is the time where we will begin to see what Tebow is really made of. Does he need to make another self declaration about how tireless his work will be and how hard his team will play? Probably not. After all, all of the guys on this roster are paid to work hard and paid to win. What Tebow needs to do is weather the storm. There have been many unrealistic expectations heaped on his young shoulders and everyone just needs to step back. It is not his fault that he was chosen in the first round. It is not his fault that people look at him as a messiah of sorts. Let Tebow be Tebow and understand that his NFL career may not reach your lofty expectations, but he is already a role model hall of famer in my book.
