2012 Heisman Trophy Winner: Sammy WatkinsDecember 19, 2011

by: CJ Oates

It is my pleasure to announce that the 2012 winner of the Heisman Trophy is Sammy Watkins. Wait, why aren’t we talking about the 2011 winner, Robert Griffin III, who had one heck of a season you ask? The reason is because Sammy Watkins was the best player in college football this season. Next season, he will still be the best player in college football and will become only the third sophomore to win the 78th prestigious award. I know this sounds insane due to the fact, he is a receiver and only two have ever won (Tim Brown and Desmond Howard) but his play-making ability early this season showed promises. Of course some things have to align correctly for this to happen because we all know the front runner will be Matt Barkley (if he comes back).

He has a lot of things going for him if you compare him statistically to another high profile receiver. In Watkins freshman season, he finished the regular season with 77 catches for 1,153 yards. This is almost equivalent to Calvin “Megatron” Johnson’s senior season where he had 76 grabs for 1,202. I know the skeptics will chime in and say well if you compare that to Michael Crabtree’s freshman season, that is nothing (he finished his freshman season with 134 receptions, 1,962 yards and 22 TDs). To be fair though, Crabtree stats are a little inflated due to the system that he played in. The thing that separates him from system receivers is the fact that like Desmond Howard, he also return kicks, which means more touches for the phenom. This season he is currently fourth national at all purpose yards. He will have to have some return some kicks and I believe at least two returns in a prime time televised game next season will win him the trophy. If you look at the last receiver that had a chance to win it and should have won it was some Pittsburgh receiver by the name of Larry Fitzgerald. His stat line for his sophomore season was 87 catches, 1,595 yards, 22 TDs. Now if Sammy can duplicate those stats or at least somewhere in the ballpark of 80 catches, 1,500+ yards and 17 TDs with two or three kickoff return/punt return for scores, he wins easily.

Sammy Watkins said that he thinks he can go after college football’s most prestigious award in 2012. Honestly, the only thing that will stand between Sammy and that Heisman trophy is Clemson playing in the ACC and Clemson QB, Tahj Boyd. If Clemson can stay undefeated next season, how much credit will be given to the quarterback? Boyd is a solid quarterback, but he isn’t the player that will lead Clemson to another BCS berth next season. Having another teammate in the race just makes it cloudy and it robs the other person of votes. Just a little note, Clemson was 0-1 without Watkins this season against a defense of NC State that he could have exposed. Watkins should and will be able to get a the head start in the race as they open up against Auburn in the Georgia Dome next season. The Heisman hasn’t been won by a receiver since 1991, but come next December, Sammy Watkins will change this.
