BUTCH DAVIS TO UCLA ?December 5, 2011
UCLA is the school that is in prime position to put a strangle hold on the Pac-12 South division. USC is flying high at the moment but scholarship reductions should hinder their performance significantly in coming years. UCLA has the opportunity to unseat the Trojans if they make the right hire after firing Rick Neuheisel last week.There are a number of complexities that come with the UCLA job: a need for upgraded facilities, increased emphasis on a winning football program by the administration and most importantly better athletes as outlined by Neuheisel in a recent interview. Southern California is rich with talent but it seems that the bulk of the good players, in recent years, either head to USC, Cal, Stanford, Washington, or Oregon. UCLA has an opportunity to unseat the Trojans and flip the balance of power in the conference for the foreseeable future if they make the right hire. The right man for the job ahead of Kevin Sumlin, Mike Bellotti, June Jones or Chris Petersen is Butch Davis. Butch comes with a lot baggage but if Mike “The Pirate” Leach can get back into the coaching ranks so can Paul Hilton “Butch” Davis Jr. The irony of bringing in Davis to restore the Bruins to power who, while at Miami, ended UCLA’s last real shot at a national title in 1998.
This pairing may seem far fetched but UCLA needs a guy who can recruit his ass off. Butch Davis helped mastermind the most talented team ever to play the college game the 2001 Miami Hurricanes. Lane Kiffin and Ed Orgeron while under recruiting restrictions are tearing up the recruiting trail as if probation only applies to squares who coach at public universities. In order to compete the Bruins need a guy that can go toe to toe with those two monsters and actually get a win or three. Davis can say hey, “I coached Ed Reed, Sean Taylor, Willis McGahee, and Andre Johnson“. Davis is simply the best evaluator of talent that the game has ever seen. The same could be said of the shear embarrassment of riches Davis put together during his short stint at UNC, especially on the defensive side of the ball. Notable players on those North Carolina teams include Quan Strudivant, Bruce Carter,Robert Quinn, Deunta Williams, Marvin Austin, Michael McAdoo. Greg Little, and Hakeem Nicks. Davis can bring them in like few others can and that is exactly what UCLA needs at this point.
Coaching at Miami is a huge advantage for Davis if he were to come to Los Angeles. The facilities problem that UCLA has is very similar to what Miami was facing in the late 90′s with the Orange Bowl and it didn’t hinder Davis on the recruiting trail. Butch also dealt with an administration that that doesn’t priortize football this was made very apparent in the “Its all about the U” documentary. Miami also prepared Butch to defend his turf against rival recruiters such as Bobby Bowden and Steve Spurrier two of the best to ever knock on a high school star players front door. If there is any coach in the country that was groomed to take the UCLA job and put together a winner in Westwood it is Butch Davis.
It is not known if Butch wants to get back on the sideline or if UCLA has contacted him but it sure seems like a match made in heaven. There have been better times at UCLA but hey they still went to the conference championship game this year so the Pac-12 will not take a miracle to dominate. It will take a guy that has built a powerhouse in similar situations before, and his name is Paul Hilton “Butch” Davis Jr.
