Epic Fail: Weiss to KansasDecember 10, 2011
In what surely will go down as the worst hire of 2011, Charlie Weiss is the head coach at the University of Kansas. The fat man with the buzz cut, limp in his step, and anemic offense is now going to make Kansas wish they hadn’t fired Turner Gill. I can’t rationalize how a man that failed at Notre Dame and Florida could possibly make an impact at Kansas, a place where it is substantially harder to win. This is not an opinion article I am neither for or against Weiss. I am neither for or against Kansas football. I am neutral to both parties plain and simple. This is a results driven issue and I can not find anything Weiss has done since he left the Patriots to be relevant. I mean how hard is it to coach Tom Brady?
I eternally root for the underdog and have done so since I was a little kid. I was elated when Washington State hired Mike Leach as head coach. Leach has a history of exciting high flying offenses every place he has coached. The Fact that WSU hired Leach gave all fans of college football a reason to be excited for Cougar football or at least take interest. Conversely, Weiss has not delivered anything but false promises and underachieving offenses. This trend seemed to start when he took over the Fighting Irish and stated that he would give Notre Dame a “decided schematic advantage” in 2005.
Charlie’s only sliver of success, as a college coach, was with Tyrone Willingham’s players at Notre Dame. After that it has been nothing but a greasy trail of failure drenched with disappointment. At Florida, Weiss did absolutley nothing with Jeff Demps, Chris Rainey, and Andre Dubose this year. Demps, Rainey and Dubose are the type of players every coach wishes they had. Yet, he still managed to produce the 102 ranked offense in the country? I do believe that Weiss could maintain a “machine” type school like Texas where there are age old recruiting pipelines. However, any school that needs a shot in the arm like Kansas should have stayed as far away from Weiss as possible.
Is man even healthy enough to coach at Kansas for a significant amount of time? Kansas needed the same type of hire that WSU made, infuse exitement and either a high powered offense or a defensive stalwart. An ageist i am not but Kansas needed a young gun not an old fart on his last leg. LITERALLY!!!!! I do not see this working out well at all for the Jayhawks. I may be the only one to say it but my how the rock chalk faithful must miss Mark Mangino.
I really believe there were several stronger options like:Kevin Sumlin, Garrick McGee, Brent Venables, Mike Stoops hell even Houston Nutt. Kansas deserved to give itself a better chance to win some games in the next three or four years than this. I would have hired Batman or Al Bundy before i hired Charlie Weiss plain and simple. There are so many talented coaches in this country that deserve a chance over a guy who consistently wastes institutions time, money, and resources. Kansas dropped the ball on hiring Charlie Weiss. Hopefully in two or three years they make a better decision.
