Ndamukong Suh: Clean on the outside, Dirty on the inside?December 20, 2011
Ndamukong Suh, fresh off of a two game suspension made his impact felt this past Sunday when he blocked what would have been a 65 yard game winning field goal by Raiders‘ kicker, Sebastian Janikowski. Suh celebrated like he just won the Lombardi trophy after the play, which makes sense because he had let his team down two games in row by not being there. I can only imagine the burden lifted off of his shoulders was as heavy as an educated family man who’s been unemployed in Detroit for over a year.
All reports off the field are that Suh is great kid. He’s smarter than your average football player graduating from Nebraska with a GPA well above 3.0. He even donated 2.6 million dollars back to Nebraska last year as well. He’s seen on Subway ads, Nike campaigns and in several more commercials for major brands.
Unfortunately, Suh’s off the field image doesn’t match his on the field image. And it shouldn’t but according to the other players in the league, Suh is seen as the dirtiest player in the NFL. I’m sure NFL Hall of Famers, Chuck Bednarik and Deacon Jones think Suh is a “normal” player or even soft because they’ve done much worse. The problem is that this is 2011 and not the 1960s and that today’s players and NFL Commissioner, Roger Goodell have spoken. After his two game suspension and his game winning play, I sat back and wondered what the brands that endorse Suh think of him.
If Suh was in trouble with the law off the field, ala Sam Hurd the Bricks, Michael Vick, etc. The brands he’s associated with now would drop him faster than rappers delete tweets. But he’s not, hes in trouble with the NFL on the field. Perception isn’t always reality, but it’s close enough when it comes to $500 million dollar brands. I can guarantee that a marketing director is thinking twice about his next ad campaign with Suh leading the way. Not because he dislikes Suh or even thinks Suh’s a dirty player. It’s because whoever is purchasing that brands’ product just might think Suh is a dirty player, and change their mind about buying something with “that one guy who stomps on people” endorsing it. You know it could be a Packers fan, Bears fan, Eagles fan or some fan of another team that Suh has dismantled one of their players after the whistle has blown. I don’t think a brand would outright end their relationship with Suh because of his dirty play, but I wouldn’t be the surprised if I saw him in less ads come next season.
What do you think? If you were a Marketing director for a major company, what would you do? Keep Suh as the face or your brand, keep him on the roster but not in the forefront, or drop him? Let me know.
That’s all I got,
Ricky Writer
