Should the Colts Tank Their Last GameDecember 30, 2011
The lightskinned negro urban warrior and press conference poet Herman Edwards once said “Hello!, you play to win the game”. Mr. Edwards is correct, but in terms of the 2011 Indianapolis Colts’ last game they should ignore the press conference poet.
The Indianapolis Colts have been on a Usain Bolt-esque coast to win the “Suck for Luck” sweepstakes until recently. They’ve inexplicably won their last two games — the only two games they have won actually. Why? No one has a clue. But their chances of getting the #1 pick in next year’s draft are in jeopardy. The Colts aren’t playing a juggernaut this weekend, they’re playing the Jacksonville Jaguars, a team with no hope looking to find itself and a big break in the city of Angels. Either team could win, and that’s not a good thing for Indy.
Another team with everything to lose, if they lose this weekend is the St. Louis Rams. They too have only won two games. Although, they have Sam Bradford it’s not inconceivable that they won’t draft Andrew Luck if they get the first pick. The Rams would much rather avoid having to make that decision with the first pick and gladly take the #2 pick.
So what are the Colts to do? Tank it or play for the win? It’s a no brainer…they should tank it. Don’t tell the players to tank it, but management should let the coaching staff know that winning is not an option. The coaches should play prevent defense all day long and literally run the ball every single down.
What do the Colts have to lose? Umm Andrew Luck and their franchise for about six to seven years. Just ask the Oakland Raiders about how not having or drafting the wrong QB can set your franchise back. You can also ask the Miami Dolphins and plenty of other teams that have tried to replace legends. The only team that it’s working out for is Green Bay. Why? They drafted Aaron Rodgers when they still had Brett Favre, he sat for three years and he came in ready to play immediately. Andrew Luck is the safest pick in the draft in years and it’s not even close.
Peyton Manning has had a great career, but he’s getting old. He’s got about three years left in him. Why not draft Luck and groom him for the future? It makes no sense not to draft him. The Colt’s can’t draft Luck if they don’t lose this game. Lose one for the Luckster!
That’s all I got,
