The 2010 Carolina Panthers went 2-14 last season with Jimmy Clausen and Matt Moore under center. I know they had injuries on both the offense and defense that may have contributed to that record, but let’s not kid ourselves here. The Panthers offense were not missing that all-star player like the Colts are this season. Not only that, but the Panthers scored a “whopping” 196 points (about 12 ppg) in 2010. Good thing for the Panthers though they played so bad that they had the #1 overall pick. With that pick, the Panthers selected Cameron Jerrell “Cam” Newton. Although the Panthers are not above the .500 mark, (5-9) they have been much improved this season on the offensive side as they have already almost doubled their point total from last season. So far they have scored 341 points (about 24 ppg) with Cam under center and two games left. You are thinking I am crazy, because I am saying that one player can drastically make or break a team. The answer is yes, especially when that position is the quarterback.
There have been times this season where Panthers fans were frustrated with Cam Newton because he was try to be a ball player and a winner (something he has been his whole life) and “forced” some bad throws. Fact of the matter is, I am glad he is trying to bring winning to Carolina because in the franchise history, they only have 4 seasons with double digit wins. If fans actually thought they would go from a 2-14 team to a 12-4 team overnight, you were fooling yourself. The Panthers have some holes that they need to fix before they reach that plateau, but they will reach it with Cam Newton as their quarterback.
Cam Newton should be a no-brainer for NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year. Don’t shoot me for that, and it is no disrespect to A.J. Green and Andy Dalton because unlike Cam, they have a chance of making the playoffs. The thing is you have to grade a quarterback off of performance not just from the team wins (which is important) but compare how each quarterback is actually playing under their circumstances. Cincy wasn’t a bad team before Carson Palmer and Chad Ochocinco abandon shipped, but the Panthers were awful.
For the Panthers to have a chance to “triple” their total of wins this season behind a rookie quarterback who doesn’t have a defense is impressive. He has started in all 14 games, completed 283-of-475 passes for 3,722 yards (the second most by a rookie in NFL history) and 17 touchdowns with 16 interceptions to post an 82.3 quarterback rating. The NFL record for the most passing yards by a rookie is 3,739 by Peyton Manning of the Indianapolis Colts in 1998.
Newton has scored 30 total touchdowns this season, and has over 4,300 all-purpose yards on the year.
Cam is not getting the spotlight treatment like he deserves because of “Tebow Time” and the Green Bay Packers undefeated season. Make no mistake, the Panthers will be making noise and don’t be surprised if you see them in the Super Bowl again within 5 years. I know it is a bold statement, but if the Panthers can find another offensive weapon and keep the defensive healthy, you can bet your lucky stars the “Lion” will bring his winning ways to Carolina. Just look at what he has done with a rebuilding and depleted team just this season. Cam has solidified himself as the next superstar in the NFL.
