Derek McCartney Family TreeJanuary 31, 2012

In the spring of 1989,in an event that has become part of Boulder, Colorado lore- Kristy McCartney bore the son of, Sal Aunese, the quarterback for the mighty Colorado Buffaloes. What was already a less-than-rosey scenario soon became painful, as Sal was diagnosed with cancer and passed away on Sept. 23, just five months after Timothy was born.
Timothy Chase McCartney eventually went on to play quarterback for the LSU Tigers under Les Miles, the same coach who recruited Timothy’s father, Sal Aunese, to Colorado as an assistant in the mid 1980′s. In November 1993, Kristy McCartney gave birth to another son — Derek whose father is Shannon Clavelle, then a junior defensive tackle at Colorado from New Orleans. At the time both births were mired in controversy; Kristy McCartney just happened to be the daughter of then Colorado head Coach Bill McCartney.
Fast forward 18 years, current Buffs head coach Jon Embree has offered Derek McCartney a scholarship to the The University of Colorado as a greyshirt. Prior to this offer, Derek had only been asked to walk-on at Baylor and Oregon. But you see, Derek was ordained from birth to be a Golden Buffalo. His father, Shannon Clavelle, played defensive line for Colorado during the glory days of Buff football. His grandfather, Bill McCartney, coached the Buffaloes to a national title in 1990. Derek attends small Faith Christian Academy which is a small where the competition is not what it would be in the state’s biggest division, or in Florida or Texas where Friday night lights outshine all other activities in every small town. However, after watching a few min of his highlights you see he has that “it” factor for a young defensive lineman. Derek’s father Shannon Clavelle was one of the best Colorado defensive lineman ever, and Derek has the opportunity to be just as good. I tip my hat to John Embree for showing respect for tradition and bringing this story full circle by offering McCartney a scholarship. I have a feeling that it will lead to special things in Boulder for the kid that was born to be a Golden Buffalo.
