The Quitter via Twitter – John McGeeAugust 8, 2012
Earlier this week, Oklahoma football freshman, John McGee who is an offensive guard, quit the Oklahoma football team. He made his announcement over Twitter. Now, I’m sure he told the coaches before he told Twitter, but nevertheless he announced it.
People are free to do what they chose, but people like me also have the freedom of speech. I was talking with a friend that played football at the University of Oklahoma and he had no respect for the kid. I tried to give him the benefit of the doubt, but then when I asked myself how I would feel if that was my son or brother…then I started to lose a little bit of respect for this kid and here is why.
This was his first training camp and he hadn’t even gone through a full week of practice.
Why did he quit? Because practice was hard? He never loved football in the first place? He doesn’t want a “free” education. (I say free loosely because these players do work for these scholarships with their practice and play on the field.)
So….you’re just going to make your mom pay for your education?
Nothing in life is easy, nothing worth having, that is. I could be wrong, but my guess is that this kid has been bigger than everyone his entire life and the game has been easy for him. He finally met up with some players his size and coaches that treated him like he was a freshman and not a high school sensation.
He’s commented on Twitter that he’s done with football forever. This game will teach you many things, one of which is it’ll show you who’s a fighter and who is not. Hopefully, this is a one time incident and he never quits at anything else again, but I doubt it.
