Monday Morning Cornerback: Week 16

Here are my quick cuts and jukes from the weekend…..

College

Fresno State should have won their New Mexico Bowl game versus Wyoming. In the first OT, they had the ball on their 1-yard line and in four attempts Ryan Matthews, the nation’s leading rusher, they couldn’t convert. The Bulldogs were also unable to stop Wyoming in the final possession of regulation when they converted three 4th down conversions to set up the game tying field goal. I love Coach Hill and Ryan Matthews, but damn fellas!

Rutgers had Central Florida out matched all game long. Coach Greg Schiano’s now taken his Scarlet Knights to five straight bowl games winning four of them. I see you over there trying to start a dynasty Coach Schiano!I told yall Rutgers Freshman QB, Tom Savage, was cold!

Damn, I hate to see Damion Fletcher go out like that in his last game of his great career with a loss. On the other hand, I like this Middle Tennessee State QB, Dwight Dasher, who balled out of control last night. A quick side note, we say Colt McCoy is the perfect name for a Texas quarterback, but Dwight Dasher has to be the perfect name for a running quarteback, imagine this kid running the option for Nebraska back in the ’80s, man! Either way Dasher has his way with the Golden Eagles in the R + L New Orleans Carrier Bowl who had 366 all purpose yards and 4 touchdowns. Middle Tennessee State 42 Southern Mississippi 32.

NFL

The Colts and Jaguars game was a good one. The Jags let is slip bottom line. Hey Indy, I see chinks in your armor, the same chinks I saw against the Patriots.

Umm…”Who Dat”? No really who dat that was playing Saturday, because it sure wasn’t the New Orleans Saints I’ve seen all year. I mean yeah, you were down against the Dolphins and Redskins, but you guys put up points in those games. Jammal Brown was sorely missed as DeMarcus Ware had his way with the Saints, and that sloppy Saints run defense caught up to them as the Boys put up 145 rushing yards on the Saints.

Yeah, Randy Moss had a bounce back game, but the Patriots just don’t look the same man.

What is it with these extra sorry teams playing the most exciting games. The Browns were involved in both of them. This time they went wire to wire with the Chiefs winning, 41-34 in Kansas City. Josh Cribbs dominated the game with two kick off return touchdowns over 100 yards in the same quarter. Let me take that back, those were only two scores, Jerome Harrison, the backup running back set a team record rushing for 286 yards on 34 carries and 3 touchdowns. He broke the record of 238 yards formerly held by the great Jim Brown. Jamaal Charles got off for the Chiefs though with 154 yards on 25 carries and a touchdown.

Jets vs. Falcons….boring. Final score Falcons 10 Jets 7. No it wasn’t a defensive slug out. I appreciate those, nope, this was purely inept offense on both sides.

Texans won…barely over the Rams, 16-13. Andre Johnson is a beast, and I hope he gets outta Houston soon and gets a chance to play for a championship.

Vince Young threw 3 tds for the first time in his career. Chris Johnson ran for pedestrian 104 yards. Umm VY is now 25-12 as a starter. Numbers don’t lie, they just don’t, their like Pinocchio. Oh yah, Texans beat the Dolphins 27-24.

Arizona won….they won ugly. Cards 31 Lions 24.

Denver started out 6-0. They’ve only won 2 of their last 8 games and now stand at 8-6 losing to the Raiders who played 3 QBs yesterday.

The Bengals had an emotional game in San Diego yesterday. I’m proud of OchoCinco for not wearing #15. I wouldn’t have minded if he did, but I know the media would have made a field day out of it. Chad even stated that he wasn’t going to do so because he didn’t want to cause a distraction. Good move Chad, don’t give the media any ammo. But the lost 27-24 to the Chargers. RIP Chris Henry.

Oh my goodness Jay Cutler. Are you serious? 25 picks thrown for the year with only 19 touchdowns for the year. He threw 3 picks yesterday so it’s pretty obvious they didn’t win, actually the lost pretty bad, 31-7 to the Ravens.

Do I have to talk about Tampa Bay beating Seattle 24-7?

San Francisco should have won this game, but they have Mike Singletary coaching. It’s time for him to go. Eagles win 27-13.

Packers vs. Steelers, now that was some good offensive football. 37-36 Steelers, breaking their six game skid. So much for the vaunted running attacks of these historic franchises, both teams only ran the ball 31 times combined. They threw the ball 94 times for 886 yards and 6 touchdowns. Big Ben threw for 503 yards and 3 tds. Damn!

Minnesota Vikings are no longer allowed to play on Sunday night football. Not like they actually played either of the two times they’ve been there anyway. If Steve Smith is like the Olympics. He comes around every four years once he gets a consistent quarterback. It’s not his fault though, imagined if he played for the Colts. Oh well they got the win in their scrimmage against the Vikes 26-7.

Chris Johnson is the best running back in football by Ed The Sports Fan

…and its not even close.

Fact of the matter is, most folks would call this post blasphemy (waiting for Kenny to strike me down with a bolt of lightning) and in part it might be. However, this post might be more to strike a comparison to another highly fabled player in our generation and to determine a fatal flaw in the crowned king of tailbacks in the NFL. Let me make this in 2 points.

#1. Chris Johnson is the next coming of Barry Sanders Marcus Allen, and he’s everything that Reggie Bush was supposed to be in this league.

#2. Adrian Peterson could quite possibly cost the Minnesota Vikings a Super Bowl in the same way that Earnest Byner (remember him?) cost the Cleveland Browns a Super Bowl.

See, fear comes in many forms, for some fear is being overwhelmed physically and not being able to do anything about it. See one Gay, William last month. However, there’s a totally different fear which in my opinion is worse, and that’s a fear of being embarrassed and made to look silly. See, what happened to William Gay was bad because he got trucked on national television, however I will say that it was a valiant effort, although the ending was quite gruesome. He tried to make the play and it didn’t work out, we’ve all been there. No shame in that…ok, not TOO MUCH shame in that.

Texans Titans Football

But, from what I’m seeing from Chris Johnson this year reminds me of what Barry Sanders used to do to folks in the open field, that is…make them look really foolish and make folks want to retire immediately. Its bad enough that’s he’s the fastest person in the NFL (sorry, but Devin Hester’s 100 speed on Madden needs to be transferred to #28 of the Titans.) but he’s got THE NERVE to be able to cut on a dime and juke and hop step with the best of them? WTF! Plus, he’s doing something that Purple Jesus is struggling mightily with right now.

He holds onto the football.

I think Adrian proved to us all that he could be a workhorse and plow his way to a remarkable season, however, for the long term everyone realizes that Brett Favre is the best thing that could’ve happen to “All Day”. Less workload, more opportunities to be truly explosive. Chris Johnson this season has had NO help at all. With the resurgence of the ever mercurial Vince Young, you could argue that Johnson has made VY10 better, not the other way around with the QB/RB relationship.

So lets compare Chris Johnson’s season thru 11 games compared to Adrian Peterson’s season thru 11 games. I mean, AP had Gus Frerotte and Tavaris Jackson at his disposal so I’d say the sides were equal.

2008 Adrian Peterson (thru 11 games) – 4.8 yards/carry, 242 rushes/1180 rush yards/8 rush TDs, 16 recs/95 rec. yards, 5 fumbles/3 lost

2009 Chris Johnson (thru 11 games) – 6.4 yards/carry, 217 rushes/1396 rush yards/9 rush TDs, 33 recs/294 rec. yards/1 rec TD, 1 fumble/1 lost

Chris Johnson is on pace to run for 2,030 yards this season, which would would rank 4th all-time, behind Eric Dickerson (2,105), Jamal Lewis (2,066), and Barry Sanders (2,053). Plus, he’s on pace for 2,457 yards from scrimmage (rushing & receiving) which would put him #1 all-time for a single season. Currently, Marshall Faulk ranks 1st with 2,429 yards from scrimmage in 1999. I need you to re-read those last two sentences and begin to realize the magnitude of the performance we’re seeing from #28.

Put it another way, if you could re-draft your fantasy team and you owned the #1 pick, who would you select?

(Insert Your Team Name Here) will take Chris Johnson, Runningback, from the Tennessee Titans.

HAS ED GONE CRAZY? WHO IS THE BEST RUNNINGBACK IN THE NFL? PETERSON? JOHNSON? IS ANYONE ELSE IN THE RUNNING? MJD? LET US KNOW YOUR THOUGHTS!

JIMMY Awards: Week 11

November 17th, 2009 | By boadurichard

utolemiss_atb_15_t607

Here are the JIMMY Awards for the 11 Week of Football

Dexter McCluster, RB/WR Ole Miss

McCluster did his Barry Sanders today. If you saw some of the cuts he made against Tennessee, oh wee! Ole Rebel rushed 25 times for 282 yards and 4 TDs in a 42-17 win over Tennessee. Just the second time in his career that he has had 20 or more carries in a single game.

Kendric Burney, CB North Carolina

Remember all of the Jacory Harris for Heisman talk? Well Burney wasn’t listening. He picked off Harris three times and took one back to the house in a 33-24 win over the Miami Hurricanes.

Chris Johnson, RB Titans

Why can’t this man get any love? He is the MVP and NFL Offensive Player of the year hands down. Look at his offensive line and his quarterback for the first seven games before VY took the helm for the last two. He rushed 26 times for 132 yards and 2 TDs. He wasn’t done though, chill out and wait a minute. He also grabbed 9 balls for 100 yards. This boy is bad! Plain and simple.

Charles Woodson, CB Packers

He dominated this game. So many people doubted this man when signed as a free agent in 2005 but he’s got 24 interceptions in 58 games with the team. This past Sunday against the Cowboys he recorded 9 tackles, 2 forced fumbles, a sack and an interception to win the game.

College

Jeremiah Masoli, QB, Oregon – He completed 19 of 31 passes or 222 yards with a touchdown and zero picks. He also rushed for 164 yards on just 13 carries and a touchdown.

Case Keenum, QB, Houston – 559 yards and had five touchdowns, including the game-winning score to Patrick Edwards with 21 ticks remaining. I’d be a moron not to hold this man down.

Texas Longhorns Secondary – 4 picks on one of the better QBs in the country. They held Zac Robinson to only 143 yards passing all game long.

NFL

Brett Favre, QB Minnesota Vikings – Favre got it in at Lambeau field of all places. Revenge or not he balled out throwing 17 of 28 for 244 yards, 4 tds and 0 picks.

Chris Johnson, RB Titans
- Johnson is the best running back on the worst team. Imagine if the Cardinals had him. Either way Every Coach’s Dream rushed for 228 yards on 24 carries for 2 tds.

Jared Allen, DE Vikings – This man continued to harass Aaron Rodgers. He got himself 3 sacks this weekend.

Chris Johnson Interview

September 24th, 2009 | By boadurichard

We sat down with Chris Johnson, also known as, Every Coach’s Dream before the regular season started to see what his outlook was for the season and other things about his life etc. By the looks of how he’s started this season, that boy was working hard in the Off-season and in training camp! He truly is homeless.

Best Games

Texans vs. Titans

Hands down this was the best game of the NFL games yesterday. I’ll have people lobbying for the Giants vs. Cowboys, but it didn’t even come close to this game at all. The teams traded highlights like Jordan and ‘Nique in the ‘88 dunk contest. The Johnson brothers put on a show. Chris Johnson is making a claim to be known as the best running back in the league. “Every Coach’s Dream” had a record setting day and could not be stopped. In a losing effort, Johnson amassed 197 yards rushing on 16 carries and 2 tds, and 9 catches for 87 yards and another td catch. In all, Every Coach’s Dream had 284 all-purpose yards and 3 tds ranging from 57 yards, 69 yards, and 91 yards.

The Titans bottled second year budding star tailback, Steve Slaton, for just 34 yards on 17 carries. I’m guessing the Titans were thinking, we’ll stop Slaton and make QB Matt Schaub beat us since Schaub’s  two wideouts, Kevin Walter and Andre Davis were held out of the game with injuries. The connection of Matt Schaub and Andre Johnson single handedly kept the Texans on the right side of the scoreboard. Schaub threw for 357 yards and 4tds. Two of the td strikes went to Andre “Rodney Dangerfield” Johnson, who grabbed 10 balls for 149 yards.

The two squads were barking at each other all game long and even got into a scrap which led to DT, Jason Jones of the Titans, being ejected. This game went back and forth and had 3 great performances and will easily be one of top games of 2009.

Boise State vs. Fresno State

Pat Hill and his anytime, anywhere team played the No. 10 Boise State “Heartless” Broncos. As you can tell, I’m a sucker for shootouts and this was certainly one of them. Fresno State, running back, Ryan Matthews ran his ass off with 234 yards on 19 carries and 3tds. In most games, Matthew’s performance, would have been enough, but not today. Boise State put up 51 points and were led by their talented running back duo of Jeremy Avery and Titus Young. The pair put up 356 all-purpose yards and 3 tds. But in the end, the Bronco defense was able to hold off the Fresno State defense just enough to keep their Bronco’s in front for the win.

Quick Cuts and Jukes

Can someone throw Jacory Harris into the Heisman race please.

Fresno State might have lost, but Ryan Matthews goes hard.

Tennessee’s defense is really good. Their team reminds me of the Baltimore Ravens pre- Joe Flacco days.

Texas Tech isn’t bad at all, and if they win a major bowl game, Leach needs to get Coach of the Year.

Washington beating USC isn’t a surprise. USC is on the rebound this year, and they always lose to an unranked Pac-10 opponent early in the season, duh!

Jake Locker is the Tim Tebow of the West.

There’s no way that was the same BYU team that beat OU on Saturday.

Either Cal is beginning their mid-season brain fart or Minnesota is not that bad.

Imagine if the Hokies opened up the playbook and let Tyrod Taylor play like he did in the final minutes against the Cornhuskers.

Where was “this” Cedric Benson in Chicago?

Drew Brees will break the single season td pass record.

The Rams and Skins should be kicked out of the NFL.

It’s something about the Patriots that’s missing.

Darrelle Revis has shut down Andre Johnson and Randy Moss in back to back weeks.

Did the Steelers lose the game or did the Bears win it.

I can put money on it T.O. had grin the size of Brazil on his face when the Boys lost.

Ray Lewis hit Darren Sproles so hard that, all of Sproles tattoos came off.
